Sarsawa Air Force Station
Located nearby Saharanpur city of Utter Pradesh state of north India, establishment of Sarsawa AFS was an important leap by Central Government to strengthen India’s armed forces. This airbase has been playing crucial role in balancing Air Forces and their control over the internal security measures. Equally is this airbase pivotal in curbing all sorts of external security threats. In fact this airbase remains a notable place in terms of training Air Forces in and around the region.
Having been developed strategically in the process to channelize Air Forces for their spread across the country, involvement of Sarsawa AFS remains apart in terms of the roles it has been playing to keep armed forces activities in order besides key factor to maintain pace for all types of rescue needs as and when Air Forces are required for involvement is and around the region.
History
Sarsawa AFS had been established strategically to ensure Saharanpur and nearby regions could equally have the presence of Air Forces for training and operations of all kinds including rescue operations and for the needs of security and safety of all kinds. Mainly a military type airport, it is still an airbase and is in operation by the security forces only. Saharanpur being one of the major bases of military operation made it mandatory for the authorities to create avenues for best possible training arrangements which also included setting up of an airfield.
The establishment of Sarsawa AFS was one such important initiative. Indian Air Forces are the owner of this military type airport which is best known as Sarsawa AFS in Saharanpur region of Utter Pradesh state which is not too far from National Capital Delhi and therefore it remains well monitored to the higher authorities for all types of security guidelines.
Located at an elevation of 891ft., from sea level, Sarsawa AFS has been established in a region that geographically coordinates at 29°59′39″N 77°25′27″E. Some of the unique features of Sarsawa AFS which can’t be missed out to mention here are that this airbase has welcomed fast development in last couple of decades. Its distance from the main city of Saharanpur in Utter Pradesh is nearby 12 kilometers and the airbase enjoys wonderful environment for training programs and various types of operations in the absence of crowds which the city of Saharanpur encounters.
Runways
Sarsawa AFS operates with its one runway. It is used for the training purposes and most Air Force jets take off and perform landing at this runway. The runway has been developed with concrete. It serves to only military fighter planes right now.
Units at Sarsawa AFS
Being an important organ of Western Air Command of Indian Air Forces, Sarsawa AFS has major roles to play for training and security operations. This airbase does maintain thorough system with multiple units operating for training purposes. Even though the units are actively involved in the training sessions and Sarsawa AFS is exclusive for the Indian Air Forces only but this airport still permit a few civilian flights on certain occasions.
Handing of such flights is done to cater to the VIP air transportation to Saharanpur area. As such unscheduled civilians flights already operate from Sarsawa AFS, plan is already underway and readied for approval to develop the airport further to make it easy for regular operation of civilian scheduled flights through commercialization of this airport. No such decision on that ground has been taken yet though.
