History
Khuga River is one of the famous and big rivers in Manipur. Near Churachandpur town, the turn of the river was so steep and during monsoon season the flow of water and thrust of waves always created the flood situations. Locals faced a lot of problems and also faced big loss of men and material in several floods. To prevent this problem, the town Churachandpur was earmarked for the purpose and construction work of this dam started in 1983. Since starting, this dam was in news due to some ambiguities at large stage. Financial constraints were there, but long time in completion was also increasing the cost of this dam. As per tentative program, the dam was scheduled to be completed by 2002 even after the disputes. But some lobbying was done on political level and the work stopped for a considerable period. Again the construction rescheduled for 2007. Finally the dam was inaugurated on 12/11/2010.
Technical Portion
This dam has been given a thick wall made of concrete and iron bars. The wall is 18.93’ thick. This is a typical dam in ‘Bay shape” category. Water of the Khuga River has been rolled over a canal to minimize the risk of flood as well as to provide irrigation facility to nearby areas. Though, farming is very less in surrounding area but the dam is also serving this purpose. Height of this dam is 38 mtrs from ground level. Total width is 238 mtrs and the cost since 1983 to completion date is estimated as 2.5 billion INR. On the banks of this dam a hydro-electricity generation plant is established. This plant is installed with the help of RM Sinha and Co while the dam, canals and spillway were designed and constructed by NPCC. More than 150SQM area surrounds this dam is being irrigated. This dam is also supplying fresh drinking water and power generation is 1.75 MW. This electricity is sufficient for the area.
