Taking care of the physically challenged population is one of the most difficult aspects of any society. The people handling this has to be very sensitive and well trained so as not to hurt the sentiments of the people involved and serve them well. This has to be backed by serious research that and the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, or the AIISH is one such institution in India that takes care of delicate issues such as speech and hearing impairment among people. AIISH is located within the Mysore University Campus. It was formed as an autonomous body in 1966 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the objective to focus on developing professionals for various speech and hearing sciences. It was formed within an existing university campus to use the infrastructure that already exists. But nerveless it was allowed to work as an independent body.

The All India Institute of Speech and Hearingis affiliated to the University of Mysore for the sake of formalities and it offers various undergraduate as well as post graduate courses. In fact it even offers doctoral degrees nowadays in various fields of Speech and Hearing. The main courses offered by the AIISH include Diploma in Hearing Aid and Earmould Technology, B.Sc. in Speech and Hearing, M.Sc. in Speech-Language Pathology, M.Sc. in Audiology andB.Sc. in Special Education of the Hearing Impaired, B.Edin Special Education, Ph.D. in Audiology as well as Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology. It also runs a Certificate Course on Communication Disorders.
The main functions of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing
All India Institute of Speech and Hearingis dedicated to conduct high end research in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology and other related speech and hearing sciences. The research activities by AIISH also focus on early identification of hearing disorders and impact of geneticdisorders on the same. It also explores intervention techniques to prevent such impairment and also undertakes various researches for making life easier for hearing impaired people. For example it works on assessment materials for Indian languages, and has been trying to develop speech recognition technology in Indian languages. It has also developed several normative data for speech as well as language acquisition in children. It has done this research for different Indian languages and has a fund to grant individual researchers on these fields so that such researchers do not get discouraged due to lack of funds. It encourages researchers not only in speech and hearing studies but several related fields such as neurology, linguistics, genetics, epidemiology, clinical psychology as well aspaediatrics etc.
Due to its services over the years the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing has been declared as a centre of by World Health Organization (WHO). The University Grants Commission (UGC), the central authority in higher education in India, has also recognized AIISH as a centre for advanced research in its field.Over the last four decades AIISH has been able to provide clinical services for speech, language as well as hearing disorders. It runs special clinical service programs for the same and provides clinical assessment and intervention services for different types of speech, language, and hearing disorders. Of late, it has also started running public education programs to create awareness about these issues across the nation.
