Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council
Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) was installed in the year 1990 by what is now known as Housing Ministry as the topmost authority for promoting the development and use of affordable and eco-friendly building materials and techniques. The Council maintains a thorough rapport with the industry leaders in new technologies, financial corporations and building constructors from all sectors along with the educational and research institutions in the country and abroad.
Objectives
- Promotion of new and affordable building materials and construction technologies in housing and building sectors, by providing impetus to their development and inclusion in the mainstream.
- Promotion of recycled materials in building and construction by providing financial concessions, technical advice and encouragement for production facilities of such materials and components.
- Development and promotion of techniques and technologies to avoid losses from and to manage disasters by evaluating existing buildings and improving these structures and encouraging disaster resistant design in new constructions.
- Facilitating the transition of new technologies by providing various services that support the material manufacturers, technical personnel and the builders to construct structures more efficiently.
Field of Operations
- Building Materials and Construction Technologies : Since its inception BMTPC is working towards innovating better perspectives towards better, cheaper and greener building materials and construction technologies to be used for housing construction. BMTPC has positively brought the new technologies from lab to land and were supported by industrialization, standardization, publicity and on-the-field application. These policies are focused around building a safe environment for affordable housing and sustainable development.
- Disaster mitigation and management : The BMTPC has published a ‘Vulnerability Atlas of India’ and as per the Disaster Management Act is working towards implementing pro-active measures against natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunami and so on. The pro-active approach adopted by BMTPC involves a better understanding of such disasters by generating statistical evidences, covering worst-case scenarios, damage mapping, vulnerability and risk analysis, research and promotion of retrofitting strategies and most importantly building more disaster resistant buildings using better materials, designs and building practices.
- Capacity Building and Skill Development : As per the Government of India, the measure of the construction industry in India, is estimated over 6 billion dollars including the public and private investments for a period over 2007 to 2012, with the employment rate of 31 million per year. It is estimated that around 82.45% of the total employment is unskilled labor. Such a swiftly growing human resource needs to be regulated and trained to ensure the proper standards of quality are maintained and to this end the BMTPC organizes awareness programs and workshops, arranges local and international exhibitions and conducts training programs for professionals of construction industry and laborers from time to time. Further, BMTPC also takes part in various exhibitions, seminars, and workshops for promotional purposes.
- Consultancy Services : The BMTPC has successfully achieved the aim of creating and providing a reasonable work-force for the advisory and consultancy services to various private and public sector projects across the country. The Council also executes the management and supervision of various government projects and represents the government in third-party evaluation for large projects such as housing societies. The BMTPC is the default agency that regulates some of the construction projects of the Central Government of India under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
