Indian Council For Cultural Relations
Indian Council for Cultural Relations is an organisation under the Indian government, but with autonomous powers, responsible for looking after relations of the country with external culture, by means of exchange of cultural wealth with many other countries. The council came into force, in 1950, on 9th April, under the tutelage of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who was independent India’s first education minister.
The headquarters of ICCR is located in Azad Bhawan, in New Delhi, with the address of IP Estate, while there are many regional offices in the whole of the country at different cities. International branches of ICCR are also functioning in various foreign countries, with new centres being opened in many more foreign countries.
Mission Statement
The statement of mission of Indian Council for Cultural Relations exists as an organisation, which would help in fostering and making the activities, along with festivals, in India and outside. Financial support is being extended to the institutions involved in organising cultural programs across the country. Also, there are financial supports extended towards people, who are adept at various activities such as theatre, arts, photography, music and dance. The Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, is given by the council, which was established by Government of India since 1965.
Activities of the ICCR
It is the mandate of the Council to carry out diplomacy through cultural activities, such as festivals in India as well as outside. Various cultural institutions are being supported by the Council, for conduct of various performances in music, dance, theatre, photography and visual arts. The Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding is administered by this council, which was started from 1965 by Indian Government.
Performing artistes were empanelled by the council in order to present the best forms of arts and other musical performances. Experts in their field of work were empanelled. There is a list of reference to which these artists are added and when performing on an international platform, they are supposed to receive sponsorships from the council.
Sponsorships are supposed to be offered by ICCR and this amounts to about 1804, every year, to students from foreign countries, seeking to study Indian music and artistic forms in India, under the government of India. many post graduate and undergraduate students have benefited from this program from more than 70 countries.
Variety of exhibitions are organised and sponsored by the council, to patronage the rich heritage and culture of India, starting from traditional forms of art to the contemporary styles, in large scales, throughout the world. Cultural exchange programs are also held with sponsorships of exhibitions in foreign countries and also allows foreign country exhibits to be showcased in India.
Publications about the cultural programs and sharing are regularly published by ICCR, for increased awareness and popularity of Indian culture.
Student and Scholarship Schemes
Carrying forward the age old tradition of high quality education in India, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations has give a boost to the study of contemporary art and culture in India. interested candidates, aiming with learn more about the culture of the country and its traditions are encouraged with scholarship programs. Every year, about 2325 scholarships under 21 schemes are provided to the interested candidates.
