National Horticulture Board
National Horticulture Mission was launched in the year 2005-2006 under the 10th five-year plan. Horticulture is the art, science and different techniques of business used in intensive plant farming for human use. National Horticulture Board (NHB) was established in 1984 by the Government of India as an autonomous body as per the Societies Registration Act 1860. The headquarter of national Horticulture Board is at Sector 18, Gurgaon (NCR). It takes up various schemes under the supervision and active guidance of the Board of Directors of National Horticulture Board and the Department of Agriculture under Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India.
Aims and Objectives of NHB
The main aim and objectives of the scheme are given below:
- To develop high technology in horticulture in recognized belts
- To develop modern infrastructure for post-harvest management as essential part of spot expansion projects or as general facility for group of projects
- To develop integrated and energy efficient cold storage infrastructure for fresh produced horticulture products,
- To popularize new recognized technologies and techniques for commercialization after assessment of technology needs.
- To assist in getting availability of quality planting stuff by setting up of horticulture nurseries and imports of planting material,
- To promote and develop new markets for the fresh horticulture produce,
- To promote field trials of new developed and imported planting materials and other inputs like production technology, protocols and processes for commercialization of established technology.
- Promotion of new technology protocols and processes in the field of cold storage infrastructure etc.
- Â Transfer of new technology in the field farming skills, cold storage techniques and processes and harvest management to the farmers and the filed trainers.
- To promote the consumption of newly developed horticulture products.
- To set up Common Facility Centres in Agriculture Export Zones and Horticulture Parks.
- To develop data base for strengthening the market intelligence system.
- To carry out surveys and studies to discover hurdles and develop strategies for planned development of horticulture and to provide required technical services like consultancy and other advisory services.
Organizational Structure
The Board of Directors supervises the management of the National Horticulture Board. The members include:
- Union Agriculture Minister - President
- Union Minister of State for Agriculture - Vice President
- Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Cooperation
- Â Financial advisor, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation
- Chairman, Agriculture and Processed Foods and Exports Development Authority
- Executive Director, National Horticulture Board
Apart from these, there are representatives from the Horticulture industry, a representative from the food processing industry and representatives from the railways and transport authority.
Projects
Under the National Horticulture board, research is carried out on Fruits (Apple, Banana, Citrus Fruits, and Litchi etc.), Vegetables (Potato, Carrots, Onions etc.), Aroma Plants (Lavender, Lemongrass, Mint etc.) and Flowers (Jasmine, Marigold, Tuberose etc.).
Most projects aim at researching disease and pests that harm these plants. Research is carried out on the soil as well to check for the essential nutrients required for stable growth. Land utilization and plantations are also observed closely.
