The impact of information technology and high speed computing is undeniable in the modern world. India has had a long struggle as a third world nation to break its barriers and present itself as an advanced society. Information Technology is one field where it has grown leaps and bounds and proven to the world that it is capable of delivering in such technologically advanced fields. While the IT and communication sector is booming in India, much of the credit should go to the pioneering instructions such as the National Informatics Centre (NIC) which took up advanced research on these fields when nobody had imagined the kind of growth it achieved later on. The National Informatics Centre was formed way back in 1976 when the IT boom was not even in the horizon. It still operates under Department of Electronics & Information Technology which is in turn governed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Government of India.It has played a major role in integrating the developments of IT in the government processes and thus distributing the benefits if technology among the population of India. For example it has played a significant role in developing e-governance systems for various departments of the national and state governments thus empowering the entire population. NIC is also responsible for the web presence of practically all government agencies as it builds and maintains all Indian-government. This center is perfect for gleaning a wide array of information.
NIC is headquartered in the capital city of New Delhi. It also has offices in all the 28 state capitals as well as 7 union-territory capitals in India. There are several Application Divisions within NIC that strive to provide quality informatics to the government ministries for various projects and requirements.NIC is also concerned with delivering quality information technology and communication services at the grassroots level which is why it is present at the district levels too. The NIC offers Technical Coordination to each and every District Administration in India.NIC has one computer cells located in every Ministry buildings of the central government. It offers similar infrastructure in other major buildings such as the Parliament house and the office of the prime minister and the president.
Services offered by National Informatics Centre (NIC)
NIC offers various networking services such as TDMA, FTDMA, VSATs, wireless MANs and LANs for government offices along with Internet gateways. It offers network infrastructure as well as e-governance support to the central and state governments of India along with various smaller administrative divisions such as district administrations. The National Informatics Centre also offers its assistance in implementing various information-technology projects taken up by the central or state governments.
The NIC offers several services includingcomputer-aided design (CAD) for various research projects and implementations and digital-signature certification for security measures. It also works closely with other departments for geographical-information system (GIS) which is imperative for understanding the geographical data of the country. It also owns the complete domain name registration process for the government and it handled the top level domains namely gov.in and nic.in. In fact it handled the entire website hosting, building and development processes for the government departments and offices.
In recent times it has been involved in various high end research works such as biomedical informatics, patent informatics and rural informatics. It has also established an internet data centre (IDC) and also able to handle mathematical modelling and simulation processes for research purpose. Apart from National Informatics Centre also undertakes training programs, mostly for the government employees.
