History
The reservoir around the lake was constructed in the year 1876. It was previously a small tank which can hold up to 500 million cubic feet (mcft) all constructed out of locally available stones made of laterite. They were later on functioned as small dams which were able to release extra water. Presently these small dams are water holding structures and have been replaced by two shutters. In the year 1997, the storage of the reservoir was enhanced to 3,300 mcft and its depth by 21.20 ft. Al of these changes enabled the reservoir to meet the demands of the drinking water requirements of Chennai. It also stores the Krishna water got from Andhra Pradesh.
