Indra Gandhi Fountain Park Military Museum
Indira Gandhi Foundation Park Military Museum is located in Vasanthnagar, Bangalore, which was raised as the first war memorial in the south, had to face challenges when Public Interest litigations arose on the point of destruction of greenery. However, Karnataka High Court set these petitions aside, on the point that it is a matter of Pride for those in Bengaluru to raise a memorial for the martyrs of the Country.
The IGFPMM is an inspiring spot to go in line with some of the prominent buildings in the same area, such as VidhanSauda, Visweswariah Industrial Museum, Raj Bhavan, High Court etc.
History
During 2008 it was decided by the Government of India to raise a war memorial in the Indira Gandhi Foundation Park located at Bangalore, allotting a 6.2 acres of area in the park, where a museum will be created apart from a Meditation Hall, which will be below the ground.
A foundation stone was laid in 2009 and the work was to commence, at which point of time there arose a Public Interest Litigation by the representatives of the nearby residential welfare association, that constructing a building in a Park which is intended to promote ecology is against the law and spirit of the legislation that was in vogue to protect the Gardens of Bengaluru. However, Karnataka High Court set it aside on the point of importance to give due respect to the martyrs of the country, also commenting that it will be a matter of pride for Bangalore to have such a memorial. The forum of ex-servicemen too impressed on the requirement of raising this war memorial, also clarifying that the Park will still be maintained in due form, even after the Memorial’s meditation hall is constructed.
Mission
The memorial has the basic objective of instilling patriotism value and spirit of National Service in Children, apart from making them know about the martyrs who gave their lives for the sake of India,.
Exhibitions
As per the blue print of the memorial, the foundation stone referred as Veeragallu will be in National tricolour inspiring everyone entering the memorial site of the Park.
The main theme of the war memorial will be symbolically represented by three specific war items, which are
- a warship
- a battle tank and
- an aircraft.
The war ship exhibited is the Scaled Model of INS Mysore, which was Delhi Class destroyer of Indian Navy.
The main battle tank is represented by Arjun and the MIG 23 Aircraft is exhibited to show the aircraft model.
The Granite wall just over the meditation hall has the names of 20000 Soldiers inscribed there, inspiring every visitor to salute them.
The motivation hall was to be covered by greenery and lawns, getting the entire area landscaped well for the public to enjoy their visit.
The Park maintains a fountain which begins to spring around from 7 PM to 8 PM which will be a pleasant sight to watch and cool breeze one would enjoy when standing nearby. This is accompanied by traditional songs in Kannada, English and Hindi.
How to Reach
The park has approaches from Raj Bhavan Road, Ali Asker Road, Infantry Road, Chowdaiah Road and Basaveshwara Road in Bengaluru, which is well connected by air, rail and Road.
Bengaluru’s Visweswariah International Airport has world-wide flight shedules, Bangalore City Railway Junction has good connectivity to all destinations of the country. Likewise, the reachability by Road is abundant from the cities of all the nearby States, and there are long distance buses plying to Bengaluru from Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
Timings and Ticket Prices
The Fountain in the Park starts at 7 PM and ends at 8 pm. Entry ticket is Rs 15, while there is a fee for parking vehicles in addition.
