History
INS Chapal, the Russian made missile boat, was brought to the Rabindranath Tagore beach at Karwar, from the Agra INS Kadamba naval base and converted into a naval museum in the year 2006.
INS Chapal had been a premier missile launcher warship of the Indian Navy, which came for operation in 1976, lost its operational capacity in course of timeafter serving 29 years. For setting this museum, the port department towed it with the help of a few fisheries boats for about six kilometres to bring it to Karwar Port. The ship weights 275 tons and its dimensions are 38.5 x 7.2 mtrs.
The job of moving the ship to its present location was taken up by J N Das and Company of Vishakapatnam and the wonderful team work of this company’s employees to set the museum ship in its place was quite admirable, since the water rising level of the sea did not cooperate for quite some hours.
The warship is positioned in a concrete platform to be placed there permanently and the entire process of laying the museum ship has been filmed for presentation to the visitors.
The Rabindranath Tagore Beach of Karwar has this tourist attraction of Warship Museum, which is drawing large number of travellers to Karwar.
