Mahakavi Bharathi Memorial Library
The city of Erode is famous for many aspects, being a gift of River Kaveri, it has fertile lands around and it is also known for the turmeric farming and few other agricultural produce. MahakaviSubrahmaniaBharathi is connected with Erode, because he gave his last lecture in life in the place called Karungalpalayam here. It is in memory of that MahakaviBharathi Memorial library is established at Erode in the very same location Karungalpalayam. This library is also popularly known as the Karungalpalayam library which is rich with a number of books and large number of readers visiting the library everyday.
History
SubrahmaniaBharathi was a National poet, so referred as Mahakavi, known for his motivational songs he created during the freedom movement of India. He was born in a place called Etaiyapuram in the erstwhile Tirunelveli district, now coming under Thoothukkudi district, where a memorial has been established for him.
It was at this Karungalpalayam library that Mahakavi gave his last lecture in life on 31st July 1921 and in a few days he passed away at the present Chennai, then known as Madras. Interestingly his speech was on the topic ‘Man is immortal’ and rightly he lives among all Indians even today because of his National Spirit and bravery.
MahakaviBharathi was the target of the British and he moved to Puduchery which was not under the command of the British, where he continued his mission of social reformation for sometime. Bharathi’s mission went along the freedom for women and a casteless society.
This reading room was originally called Karungalpalayam Reading Room, later in order to honour the Great National Poet Bharathi, it has been renamed as MahakaviBharathi Memorial Library.
Collections
This library has a good collection of the portraits of MahakaviBharathiar, besides the entire works written by him. All his speeches that were published in SwadesaMithiran a popular daily of those days are also preserved and kept here. MahakaviBharathi Memorial Library is going to be upgraded with a collection of about 40000 books to be stored here for the benefit the public.
Exhibitions
The book collections are the major attraction of the library, besides large volumes of articles written by Mahakavi. There is also a collection of items depicting the life of MahakaviBharathi, which can be considered a historical museum. The visitor to the library will have large amount of material to know about MahakaviBharathi, particularly research students in Freedom movement can be highly benefitted by visiting this library.
How to Reach
Karungalpalayam is part of Erode and reaching Erode by road or rail is very easy. Large number of Tamilnadu State Transport Buses connect Erode in their local as well as Long distance routes and any traveller can reach this place at a moment’s notice from any part of Tamilnadu.
By Rail, Erode junction is a prominent Railway Station with rail connections in different routes, with fast moving trains reaching all the parts of the country. It is one of the Railway stations which is busy all the 24 hours, with trains passing through different directions.
For one to reach Erode by air, Coimbatore Airport and Salem Airport are the nearer airports to Erode, although one can choose Chennai or Tiruchirappalli too.
Timings and Ticket Prices
With no specific information available, the library timings could be 9.30 am to 5.00 pm, which is the time all District libraries observe and admission is free.
