South Central Railway
History
South Central Railway was carved from the Southern Railway and Central Railway by grouping Vijayawada and Hubli Divisions of Southern Railway and Secuderabad and Solapur Division of Central Railway. Since then, in the last forty-five years and more, South Central Railway has made tremendous progress and grown into a modern railroad of distinction committed to the service of the nation. With headquarters at Secunderabad, the South Central Railway serves the states of Andhra Pradesh and parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
South Central Railway was formed on 2nd October, 1966 as the 9th zone of the Indian Railways. In its forty plus years of committed service and path breaking progress, South Central Railway has grown to a modern system of mass transportation fulfilling the aspirations of its passengers/customers and has carved a niche for itself in Indian Railways system. Now the zone has the following divisions: Secunderabad, Guntur, Hyderabad, Nanded, Guntakal and Vijayawada.
South Central has everything that a progressive modern railway should have to serve the states in its jurisdiction; infrastructural development, technological upgradation, improved safety measures, expansion of network, better passenger amenities and more. These have been an important part of growth and overall development of the region.
Some of the technological innovations that have been incorporated are:
- State-of-the-art high powered Diesel and Electric Locomotives
- High speed telescopic Passenger Coaches
- Wagons that can carry heavier loads or higher axle load wagons
- Higher capacity tracks on important routes
- Multiple-color signaling and solid-state interlocking
- Micro-wave and digital communication system.
Facilities for passengers include:
- Computerized Passenger Reservation System
- Inter-active Voice Response System (IVRS) for Reservation and Train Enquiry
- National Train Enquiry System (NTES) for real time information on movement of trains
- Passenger Operated Enquiry Terminals (POET) with information on availability of accommodation and confirmation
- Close Circuit Television (CCTV) for real time reservation availability status at all important stations in its system.
The milestones in the progressive and ambitious journey of South Central Railway have been noteworthy playing a significant role in the industrial and commercial growth and agricultural development of Southern India and also encouraging import and export by serving the sea ports and the hinterland in the area that the South Central Railway services.
- Many super fast and intercity trains have been introduced.
- To facilitate effective operational and administrative control, Secunderabad Division was bifurcated in February, 1978 into two Divisions Secunderabad and Hyderabad.
- Laid 342.8 Route Kms of new lines, converted 2676.2 Route Kms from Metre Gauge to Broad Gauge, doubled track on 1272.5 Route Kms, constructed many major river bridges including II Godavari Bridge and III Godavari Bridges at Rajahmundry were built.
- For gaining efficiency in freight operations, Freight Operations Information System (FOIS) was implemented. Also, Rack Management Systems was implemented at 23 Stations and Terminal Management System at 31 Stations.
