Mundra Sea Port
The Mundra Port is the biggest port of the country which is private. Found in the district of Kutch in the Gujarat state, Mundra falls on the Gulf of Kutch northern shores around 50 km to Anjar in south and 44 km east of the Mandvi Port. About 60 thousand population, majority of them being migrants, reside in the Mundra port.
The Mundra Port besides being a private port is also a SEZ. Established in 1998 with the name Gujarat Adani Port Limited (GAPL), company started operating in the year 2001. The Special Economic Zone of Mundra was created in 2003, and in 2006 it got merged up with GAPL. The combination of two companies was renamed as “Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited.” It is the premier port of the country having a SEZ based on multi-products.
History
The Maritime Board of Gujarat in 1994 had an approval for setting up of a jetty which was captive based at Mundra’s Port. In 1998, Gujarat Adani Port Ltd., a joint sector company was established and berths 1 and 2 which are multi-purpose at Terminal I started operating. The multi-purpose berths 3 as well as 4 got opened at Ist Terminal in the year 1999.
The Mundra Port in 2001 signed up an agreement of concession having GMB for developing, operating, and maintaining the port of Mundra. Besides this, private railway line of Mundra-Adipur reaching to Vasco da Gama got accomplished and in 2002, it got integrated within the railways of India.
The Guru Govind Singh Refineries Ltd. in 2002 came to an agreement with Mundra port for handling crude oil here. There were additional agreements in 2002 being approved by Indian Oil Corporation for setting up a single-point facility at Mundra as well as handling crude oil. There was an agreement of sub-concession signed in 2003 for adding a terminal of container at Mundra port, and the terminal started to operate that year. The Adani Port Limited got merged with Gujarat Adani Port Limited in 2005. The facility of Single-Point Mooring had become operational in 2005.
2006 had been the year of events for the Mundra Port as the SEZ here was announced. There were 2 new berths for handling bulk cargo at second Terminal became operational. There was a train for container which was double stack and became operational. The Mundra SEZ Ltd. Along with Adani Chemicals Chorku Ltd and Gujarat Adani Port Ltd. had a merger, and the name of the company got transformed to Mundra Port along with Special Economic Zone Limited (MPSEZ).
There was addition of two berths more in 2007 for the purpose of bulk cargo at second Terminal, and beginning of terminal trial operations. Tata Power came to an agreement with the port for producing power to handle imports of coal cargo. Besides, in 2007, the equity shares of MPSEZ had been offered to employees and the public on the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange. Ultimately, there was an agreement of service made with Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. in 2008 for handling automobiles exports.
Location
The Port of Mundra has a strategical location for global trade, it is found on the north coast of Gulf of Kutch towards the west coast of country, Mundra Port offers a convenient international trade gateway for countries like Europe, America, Africa and the Middle East. It has a deep draft of 12.5 Meters – 17 Meters to enable large vessels like Panamax as well as super post Panamax carriers for docking along its berth. It comprises of a large land area for developing, part of which is at present the Mundra SEZ that proposes to fascinate port-led development of the industry. Mundra Port is located in Gujarat, regarded as India’s most industrialized, commercially good and investor friendly states.
Connectivity
Rail
- The Adani Group has incorporated a 117 Km network of railway which includes Mundra to Adipur link of rail.

- The Ministry of Railways already began building of doubling Dedicated Freight Corridor with high speed between Mumbai and Delhi. The corridor would connect Mundra, Adipur, Palanpur, Gandhidham and Mundra.
Road
External Connectivity
The Mundra SEZ comprises of seamless connectivity to northern as well as western parts of the country through National Highway (NH 8A Ext.) & State Highway (6 & 48).
Internal Connectivity
there is 150 kms of arterial as well as sub-arterial road network being planned for the SEZ having 70 kms completed. There are roads designed according to the safety norms and IRC Standards Codes.
Air
The closest commercial airports for Mundra SEZ are at Kandla and Bhuj 60 km amd 65 kms respectively.
- The Mundra Airport has a license in ‘Private Category’ having Air Traffic Control (ATC) operated by Airport Authority of India (AAI).
- Precision Approach Path Finder has already installed facilities of good approach in Jet Aircrafts
- There are facilities for Night Landing of Air Crafts by having Runway Lighting.
- There is a Air Cargo Hub which is internationally planned
Pipelines
Due to distance advantage on large ports such as ports of Mumbai, port of Mundra is chosen for crude as well as other liquid cargo bounding for northern hinterland that includes the Punjab refineries. The Pipelines are laid to Bhatinda.

Single Point Mooring
For handling liquid cargo of very large crude carriers (VLCC) as well as ultra large crude carriers (ULCC) , the port has developed a facility of Single Point Mooring (SPM).
The SPM is found 4 nautical miles ( meaning 8 km) away from offshore with water depth of 32 m to handle VLCC or ULCC upto 3,00,000 lacs DWT (i.e. tons in dead weight).
SPM has capacity of crude evacuating at the rate of 8,000-12,000 tons per hour (THP).
The port of Mundra consists of in principle approval for 4 (Four) SPM (Single point mooring) among which 2 are completely operational.
Facilities
Dry Cargo Handling & Storage
Mundra Port comprises of state-of-the-art facilities to handle and warehouse dry cargo at Multi-purpose Terminal along with West Basin. The facilities of dry cargo handling as well as storage at every location described here.

Facilities At Berth
- 12 nos. Liebherr and 4 nos. Gottwald mobile harbor cranes SWL 100 meters have hook and grab mode.
- There are 2 rail-mounted hoppers of mobile to import conveyers for direct discharge.
- 3.6 km conveyor system having capacity to handle 1,500 TPH of import and export cargo.
Equipments For Cargo Handling
- There is a 1 no. 1000 TPH loader of ship.
- Excavators having 40 nos.
- CAT loaders having 50 nos. including 8 nos.
- Internal transportation having 60 nos. 40 ft trailers.
- 03 nos. 20 MTS Goliath cranes having vacuum handling attachments of pipes. It has the capacity to handle 8 to 56 diameter pipes.
- Having a capacity to handle 14-58 diameter pipes, there are 02 nos. Liebherr cranes with attachments of vacuum handling pipe.
- 2 nos. 45 tonnes and 4 nos. 32-tonnes capacity for lifting forklifts of multiple attachments to handle steel coils, slabs and plates.
- To handle cement coated pipe, 1 no. reaches 45 tonnes stacker.
Facilities For Storage
- 44 bagging machines in fertilizer cargo complex which is state of the art fully mechanized fertilizer. It can handle 8-10 fertilizer rakes per day which are 28,000 tonnes per day.
- Engrossing area of 223,520 sq. meters, there are 27 closed godowns to store several cargoes such as fertilizer raw materials (FRM), fertilizers, DOC, rice, wheat, sugar etc.
- There is a dedicated steel yard area of about 120,000 sq. meters to store steel pipes, plates, steel slabs and steel coils.
- At the side of rails there is an area of 26,000 sq. meters for open storage.
- 432 TPH can be handled by 12 bagging lines.
- Trucks having 8 nos. bridges of weigh.
- Weigh bridges of rails having 2 nos.
West Basin

Liquid Cargo Handling & Storage
The Mundra Port is the most advantageous port to offload and warehouse liquid cargo having following facilities:
- The road tanker loading of 88 pumps is dedicated to individual tanks
- There are 88 loading bays meant for unperturbed delivery from each tank viz. 3 road tanker having loading simultaneously and 12 bays being unloaded.
- The Bulk Bitumen facility of storage tank within port. There are 2 tanks having 3000 Kiloliter each and a 430 KL service tank.
- Fire fighting, circulation of hot water, nitrogen, effluents treatment plant (ETP) as well as oil-water separator systems
- 9 pump houses as well as 7 Weighbridges in terminal
- Tank terminal comprising of 97 tanks having total storage volume about 4, 25,624 kiloliter to store various liquids such as edible oils, chemicals, petroleum products and bitumen in bulk.
- The Pipelines having cup pigging system to push pipe line product and an effective cleanliness of pipe line.
- The Export pumps installing 300x4 Nos. and 500x3 Nos. from tank to vessel.
- The Encl-9 tanks having 16 nos. for radar Gauges as well as Mass flow meters at the end of delivery.
- There is connectivity of rails for loading and unloading vegetable oil.
Future Plan
- There are plans for expansion of 1, 20,000 Kiloliter tank farm having dedicated Jetty and loading arm.
- The Liquid Tank farm automation
- Black POL products having facility of rail Loading/unloading.
