Himachal Pradesh Bajreswari Temple
The location of this sacred Hindu temple is a hill close by renowned Chamunda Devi Mandir. However, the main deity of this sacred worship place is known as many names such as Vajrabai, Vajreshwari, Bajreswari and Vajrayogini. According to Hindu mythology, Bajreswari Devi is one of the incarnations of goddess Maa Parvati. The literally meaning of her name is, “a lady with Vajra or thunderbolt”.
According to the legend, there was a demon called Kalikala killed various sages and disturbed their religious works. Hence, Devas decided to kill him but they could not do so. So Devas started doing a holy Yajna and out of the fire of Yajna, Maa Bajreswari appeared. She killed demon and grated Vajra to Indra, king of Devas. Hence the place is known as Vajreshvari now called Nagarkot.
History
However, there is no proper evidence about when this temple was built but as per the legend; it was constructed by Pandavas in the era of Mahabharata. According to the Hindu mythology, Pandavas, the princes dreamt one day in which Goddess Durga Maa suggested them to build a temple for her so that they could secure themselves else they would be spoiled. Hence, during the same night Pandavas decided to construct a temple for her at Nagarkot location. According to the Indian history, this temple had tons of pure gold and all the Ghantas in the temple were made of silver. So due to this extra-ordinary wealth, this temple was looted many times by various Muslim invaders. It is said that Mohammad Gaznavi also looted this sacred Hindu worship place more than five times. However, during 1905 earthquake, the temple was completely destroyed but it was rebuilt by the then government.
