Karnataka Chamundeswari Temple
The famous Chamundeswari Temple is situated in the Chamundi Hills in Mysore in Karnataka. The temple was in fact named after Goddess Durga or Chamundeswari, the representative of power. The temple has been constructed since the time of the Maharajas of Mysore and is still popular today. In fact, it is considered as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas. Thus, the temple is also known as Krouncha Peetham. The temple currently comprises of seven storeys and each of the storeys is decorated with beautiful carvings. The deity of the Goddess is made of gold.
Facts
The history and origin of the temple is very much related to the mythology of Daksha Yoga as well as the self immolation of Sati. The hair of Sati Devi has said to have fallen in this temple, and thus, the deity worshipped here is referred to as Chamundeswari Devi. The shrine was probably built in the 12th century. The devotees have to take a flight of 1000 steps in order to reach the hill temple.
Best Time to Reach
The temple can be visited from Bangalore and the best time to leave the city for the temple is during the morning. The Mysore Road is smooth. Mysore can also be easily reached by rail or air, but the trip o the temple will be through roads. As one reaches the Mysore city, the temple can be viewed from all corners of the city.
Event Associated with Temple
The temple is visited by many people especially during the time of Dusshera and Rathothsava. Large numbers of poojas are performed during this time.
