Kerala Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple
The renowned Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna temple is a sacred Hindu worship place of Lord Sri Krishna. Moreover, the sacred idol in the worship place is related to Lord Parthsarthi along with a whip in his right hand and sacred conch in his left hand. According to history, during the horrible raids of King Tipu Sultan, the sacred idol of lord Krishna was brought from famous Guruvavoor temple to sacred Ambalappuzha temple in order to save it in the year of 1789. The sacred Pavasam which is served in this sacred temple is highly popular among all the Hindu pilgrims. The Pavasam is made of milk and rice. According to legend, during the distribution of Palpayasa Nedyan, Guruvayoorappan reaches at the temple to have it.
History
Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna temple was constructed by King Chembakasserry Pooradam in the year of 790 AD. As per a popular legend, Lord Sri Krishna once visited at the palace of local king in the disguise of a sage. Lord Sri Krishna in the form of sacred sage challenged the local king to play chess. In case of winning the game king had to pay rice. The rice distribution was really interesting, in case of defeating, king needed to pay rice as reward money. King needed to place one grain of rice in First Square and Second Square of chess should be placed with two grains of rice. King was surprised and asked for more money as he thought winning money should not be only grains of rice. However, sage did not ask anything else but grains of rice. When the game started, sage won the game and king needed to pay reward money. He placed one grain of rice in chess’ first square. However, after sometime he released that he could not be able to fulfill sage’s reward. King calculated that if donate all his grains stock even that he could not be able to pay reward money which was rice grains. Seeing king in puzzled, lord Krishna came to his original form and said that king needed not to pay all the debt immediately but he could pay it later. Hence, since then the ritual of rice grain has been performing in the temple.
Architecture
The sacred Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna temple is a master piece of Travancore kind of architecture. The shikharas of the temple have been adored with Hindu symbols. The center of the temple is divided into two parts – one is inner centre and second one is outer centre. Inside the inner centre, visitors or devotees can see the idols of Hindu Gods and Goddess while in outer centre, religious rituals are performed. The major attraction of this sacred Hindu worship place is the idol of Lord Sri Krishna. It is said the idol of Lord Sri Krishna is made of Ashta Dhatu or combination of eight metals.
