The temple comes under the 12 sacred Jyotirlingams in the country. The temple lies on Shivapuri or Mandhata Island in river Narmada. It is said the sacred shape of the island is like omkar which is also a name of lord Shiva. Being one of the sacred Jyotirlingams in the country, Omkareshwar temple is considered as one of the holy abode of Bhagwana Shiva. Moreover, during Mahashivratri, a festival devoted to Lord Shiva, devotees all around the country gather here to have Darshan and blessings of Lord Shiva. This ancient temple has been built in traditional Indian style of architecture.
History
According to the Hindu mythology, Vindhya Parvat, a mount worshiped Lord Shiva to gain power so that it could be bigger than Meru Parvat, a mount. Vindhya parvat worshiped lord Shiva and seeing its great devotion, lord Shiva gave it a boon to grow itself as much as it wants. However, lord Shiva told to Vindhya Parvat to avoid disturbing his devotees but it forgot Shiva’s words. Hence, due to Vidhya Parvat’s large size, people became worried and they went to Agstya Rishi, a great sage. Agastya met Vindhya Parvat and told it that it should not grow till he return. However, sage Agastya never returned and it remains on its original size.
However, there is also another legend regarding Omkareshwar temple is that during the horrible war between Devas and Asuras, Devas was going to be beaten by Asuras or demons. Then they worshiped lord Shiva to save them from Asuras or demons. Lord Shiva saved Devas from Demons and told to them that they should install a sacred lingam at that place. Hence, Omkareshwar’s Lingam came to existence.
