Maharashtra Bhimashankar Temple
The Bhimashankar area is also known as a source of Bhima River that merges with river Krishna near Raichur. The temple has been designed by using ancient and contemporary style of architecture. Mahashivratri is the main festival at this place thus during the festival visitors or devotees from all over the country gather here to have sacred Darshans and blessings of Lord Bhimashankar.
History
It is a known fact that this sacred worship place is a composite of new and old structures in great Nagara kind of traditional architecture. The temple got its architectural glory by skilled Vishwakarma sculptors. The temple was constructed during the 13th of century. However, the Sabhamandap of the temple was constructed by Nana Phadnavis during 18th of century. The sacred Shikhara of the temple was also constructed by shree Nana Phadnavis. However, according to the Indian history, the great Maratha king Shri Shivaji Maharaj renovated it greatly. Moreover, like all other temples of Shiva, the sanctum of the temple formed at very lower stage. However, this temple is new but the Bhimarathi River and Bhimashankaram have been greatly referred to in Maratha literature of 13th century. According to legend, great sage Jhaneshwar Maharaj also visited Bhimashankar and Tryambakeshwar. Moreover, an exclusive bell in roman kind is also formed just before the temple which was offered by Shri Chimaji Appa. When Chimaji Appa defeated Portuguese then he collected two important bells. Hence, Chimaji Appa offered one bell at Bhimashankar temple and other to Menovali temple.
How to Reach
By Air
Lohegaon airport is the nearest airport that connects the town to all other major cities or towns of the country. Hence, from airport, visitors or pilgrims can easily hire bus, taxi and car to reach at the temple
By Rail or Train
Some of the nearest railway stations are Shelu railway station only 26 km, Neral railway station also 26 km and Bhivpuri railway station 27 km away from Bhimashankar temple. Hence, from railway station visitors or pilgrims can hire local vehicles to reach at the temple.
By Road
Regular taxis, cabs and buses connect the town to all other parts of the state. Hence visitors or pilgrims can also use road-transportation to reach at Bhimashankar temple.
Weather and Time to Visit
Pune city experiences both cold and hot climates throughout the year. Hence, the best time to get there is from the month of July to February.
Winters – from November to February, during this period minimum temperature could drop down to 10 degree Celsius.
Summers – from March to June, during this period, the temperature could rise to 42 degree Celsius.
Monsoons – from July to September, during this period, city faces average level rainfalls.
