The main deity worshipped in the Kasba Ganapati temple is Lord Ganesh. The name of the temple can be dedicated to the Lord Ganesh as the temple stands around the idol of Lord Ganesh. It was in the year 1630 that when Jijabai visited Pune city along with her son Shivaji. On visiting the place Shivaji got distressed on seeing the condition of the maval community. At the tender age of 12 he took the strong decision of fighting for the mavals against the Mughals. The temple was constructed by JijaBai on discovering the idol of Lord Ganesh as told by Dado JiKonddeo. From this time onwards the city of Pune was declared as the city of Lord Ganesh. The community of the Peshwas majorly worshipped the temple of Lord Ganesh.
In the year 1893 one of the greatest freedom fighters and also known as Cub of India, Bal Gangadhar Tilak decided to declare a day dedicate to Lord Ganesh and was named as Ganesh festival. The intentions behind this festival was to bring together the people to a platform where they can share their views about how to convent against the British rulers. The initiation of the festival was done from the house of Bal GangaDhar Tilak that was located in Kesari Wada. Later this festival was celebrated as a public festival.
The end of the festival is marked by immersing the idol of Lord Ganesh in river but this was the point of conflict between the different mandals communities.
