Odisha Baliharachandi Temple
The temple of Baliharachandi is located at a distance of 27 km in the south west direction of Puri. The temple is located above the sandy hill very close to the calm and serene sea and hence attracts large number of devotees. The temple has been dedicated to Goddess Durga and the front of the temple faces the Bhargavi River. The unique location of the temple is the other reason that many tourists get bound to visit the temple. The temple is standing facing the east direction while it is worshipped for the Goddess Durga with eight arms or also said as Asta-Bhuja Durga and is worshipped in the form of Baliharachandi. The local fishermen and boats men worship the goddess as their savior from water and help them in the steering.
The temple is operation in a similar manner as in Sri Jagannath temple is respect to sacramental performed on the day of Mahanavami that falls in the Ashwin month. The other festivals celebrated in the temple are Navaratri, Durga Puja, Ramanavami and ChaitraMangala Bara. To the hind of the Rahapaga idol of Goddess Kali is located at the base having serpent, skull and splitted head in the left arm. The pose of the idol resembles that of an Alidha that stands on Lord Shiva’s body. The temple is preserved by the Archaeology department of Orissa and falls in the jurisdiction of Endowment Department of Government of Orissa.
The temple is known for the saktapitha located in the Brahmagiri area.
