Odisha Gangesvara Siva Temple
The renowned Gangesvara Siva temple is located within a precinct at the left part of the Yamuna-Ganges Street in old town. It is situated within 200 meters distance from the famous Lingaraj temple. The presiding deity of this sacred Hindu worship place is Shiva linga which has been placed within a Yonipaitha. It is facing towards the eastern direction.
History
The sacred Gangesvara Siva temple was constructed by Ganga rulers during 13th to 14th century CE. According to a popular Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati killed the Basa and Kirti, the demons at the famous Ekamra Kshetra. Hence, having killed the demons, Goddess felt thirsty. So, Lord Shiva greatly struck his own trident into earth. Thus a sacred spring came out of earth that became famous as Yamuna and Ganga. So, in the memory of Yamuna and Ganga, two sacred temples called Yamunesvara and Gangesvara were constructed during the rule of Ganga kings.
